Most filtration jobs up here are one of two things: taking the taste and sediment out of mains water, or making tank water safe and pleasant to drink. They need different setups, and the second one needs more than a cartridge.
The part people get sold and then forget is servicing. A cartridge past its life stops filtering and starts holding what it caught, so the install matters less than whether it is easy to change and whether anyone remembers to.

Why it's different up here
Tank water is common up here and it is the case where filtration is doing a real job rather than an optional one. Roof catchment brings leaf litter, grit and whatever the gutters have collected, so a first flush diverter and a proper sediment stage do more for the water than any cartridge at the tap. On mains, the usual complaint is taste rather than safety, and that is a much simpler fix.

Do I need a filter on mains water?
You do not need one for safety. Plenty of people want one for taste, sediment or a fridge line, which is a preference rather than a problem, and we will say so rather than selling you a system you do not need.
Is tank water safe to drink?
It depends on the catchment, the tank and what treatment is on it. Filtration alone handles sediment and taste; making it reliably safe to drink is a treatment question. We will tell you which of those you are actually asking about.
How often do cartridges need changing?
It varies with the cartridge and how much water goes through it, and the manufacturer's interval is the starting point. What matters more is that somebody actually does it, so we log the date and remind you.
