Roof plumbing is everything that gets water off the roof and away from the house. Gutters, downpipes, rainwater heads, flashings, valleys and the stormwater line they feed into.
It is also the work most often done badly, because a gutter that looks fine from the ground can be sitting dead flat or pitched the wrong way. You find out in the first real downpour, usually through a ceiling.

Why it's different up here
Two things make roof plumbing harder up here than on the coast. The first is the leaf load. Gums drop year round rather than in one autumn, so a gutter that is cleared in March is carrying litter again by winter. The second is the rain, which arrives hard rather than steadily, and a gutter only has to be marginally undersized or wrongly pitched for that to end up over the fascia and into the eaves. A lot of the original galvanised guttering on older mountain houses is also at the end of its life, and it tends to fail at the joints first.

Is a roof plumber different to a roofer?
They overlap and they are not the same ticket. Roof plumbing is a licensed class in NSW covering the guttering, downpipes, flashings and rainwater goods. Roof Plumber sits on licence 479856C alongside plumbing, drainage and gasfitting, which you can confirm on the NSW licence register.

Then it is usually pitch, capacity or the downpipes. A gutter sitting flat holds water instead of moving it, and a long run with one undersized downpipe will spill at the far end no matter how clean it is. Both are fixable without replacing the whole run in most cases.
Is gutter guard worth it?
It reduces how often someone is up there, and it does not end the job. The wrong product on a gum-heavy block traps litter on top of the mesh and turns it into a garden bed. We will tell you whether your roof is a good candidate before you spend the money.
