Why it's different up here
A lot of the drainage up here went in decades ago and was then built over, landscaped, and in plenty of cases re-routed by an owner without a diagram ever being drawn. The sewer diagram from the water authority shows the main line, not the additions that came after it. On a sloping mountain block with sandstone close to the surface, digging in the wrong spot costs you a day with a jackhammer. An hour with the locator first is cheaper.
The things people ask
Can you locate plastic pipe?
Yes. Metallic lines trace directly. For PVC and earthenware we put a sonde down the line with the camera and trace that instead, which is also how we pinpoint a blockage or a break rather than guessing at where it sits.
How accurate is the depth?
Close enough to dig to. We do not claim millimetre accuracy, and ground conditions and whatever else is buried nearby both affect the reading. We will tell you when one looks less certain rather than letting you dig on it.
Do I still need Dial Before You Dig?
Yes, and it is free, so do both. It goes by Before You Dig Australia these days, though nobody on a job site calls it that. Their response covers the utilities' assets in the street. It does not cover anything on your side of the meter, which is where private sewer, stormwater and irrigation lines sit.
