Backflow is drinking water being pulled the wrong way through a connection and taking whatever it finds with it. A backflow prevention device is what stops that, and on the higher hazard connections it has to be a testable one.
Testable devices need an annual test by an accredited tester, with the report lodged. Miss it and you are non-compliant, which matters for commercial premises, food businesses and anyone whose insurer or landlord asks for the paperwork.

Why it's different up here

How often does a backflow device need testing?

Do I need one at home?
Most ordinary houses do not need a testable device, though some connections do, and irrigation is the common one. If you are not sure, we can look at what is there and tell you plainly whether it applies to you.
What happens if the device fails the test?
Most can be rebuilt rather than replaced, and we carry the common repair kits. If it has to be replaced we tell you the hazard rating it has to meet so you are not paying for more device than the connection requires.
